Toxic Friendships: creating healthier, supportive environments for individuals affected by bullying

“You’re being a bad friend”

Sometimes we hear this from someone we hold close to our hearts.

This month our coalition meeting focuses on toxic friendships, bullying, and the impact on mental health. We tend to hear these terms often, either in conversations or on social media. But what do these actually mean?

Friends are an important aspect of life - they provide support emotionally and socially. Studies have also found that they can contribute to your wellbeing. However, there are some friendships that can impact you negatively. Here are some signs of a toxic friendship:

Feeling drained

Being around your friends should be uplifting and supported. If you feel drained or stressed, you should evaluate if it’s worth being around that specific friend.

Loneliness and isolated

We have friends for connection and to socialize. However, in this friendship, you feel ignored or purposefully left out of plans or excluded from group activities.

Lack of boundaries

On the other hand, a toxic friend can also lack boundaries. They can become obsessive and demand too much from you. With your time, space, and disregard limits you set.

There are so many signs to toxic friendships and these are only a few examples! So now what? It’s important to step back and prioritize yourself and reflect on your situation…you can choose to talk it out with the friend or maybe even reach out to a trusted individual.

For more information watch the recording of our coalition meeting! We were joined by amazing mental health professionals that gave in-depth tips and recommendations on how to navigate this topic.
